Fifteen members of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) led by Caleb Alaka have written a petition seeking to suspend the Attorney General Peter Nyombi from their profession on grounds of being an embarrassment and exhibiting irresponsible behaviour as a lawyer.
According to a petition received by the Secretary General of ULS Nicholas Opio, the lawyers demand that an extraordinary meeting be convened within two weeks to move a motion discussing Nyombi's conduct.
The advocates accuse Nyombi of lacking the minimum expertise in interpreting legal and constitutional matters. Among these is where Nyombi allegedly misadvised President Museveni to reappoint a retired Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki as a Chief Justice with a two year contract.
They also cite Nyombi advising the President to appoint serving army officer General Aronda Nyakairima to a civil office as Internal Affairs minister. They also accuse Nyombi of assuming the powers of the Constitutional Court when he purported to interpret the ruling of Speaker Rebecca Kadaga on retaining the four expelled NRM MPs in the House.
