Police in Kisoro has recovered the bodies of two pupils of Gisoro primary school who were on Friday evening killed by landslides as they prepared supper at their home.

Mugisha James 13, a primary six pupil and his seven-year-old brother only identified as Muhire were killed at about 5:30pm during a heavy downpour. The deceased are residents of Nyagishenyi Village in Kisoro town council.

Teopista Mujawimana, the mother of the victims says she had left them in the kitchen and brifly went to the main house, only to return and find the entire kitchen almost buried.
She cried for help from the neighbours who alerted the local leaders to come and help. But it was too late.

Police and the locals started the search for the two but their efforts were rendered fruitless as more mud kept on pilling on top of what used to be the kitchen.

This prompted the Kisoro district police commander, Bosco Otim and other leaders who included Kisoro mayor Sam Byeibisho and Milton Bazanye Mutabazi, the local council five chairperson to call off the search for fear of losing more people in the process of searching for the missing children. The locals were using spades and hoes to
search for the victims.

The search resumed on Saturday morning up to around mid day when the bodies were recovered.

The family’s house was also partially destroyed after the back wall fell down but the mother survived as she was in another room.

DPC Bosco Otim has asked locals to be on alert as heavy rains continue in the district.
