The Kyamuswa county Member of parliament, Moses Kabusu, has threatened to sue the Kalangala district administration for the alleged illegal taxes levied on fishermen. The fishermen in Kalangala are expected to pay an environmental Tax, a monthly boat tax of 10,000 shillings and market dues. During a meeting with the fishermen in Kyamuswa County, Kabusu however said that the taxes were outlawed by the government. Kabusu also expressed concern about the way the taxes are collected from the fishermen. He said that several fishermen have been harassed by the beach management enforcement personnel who were given the task to collect the taxes. Kabusu told the fishermen that the local government permanent secretary, Vincent Sekono, is expected in Kalangala district to sort out the impasse over the taxes. Last week, the district chairman, Daniel Kikola, said that the taxes were levied to increase revenue in the district.
