A police officer attached to Kisoro police station in Kisoro district has been killed by unknown assailants.
The deceased is Moses Kilongosi who was attached to the Field Force Unit.
The assailants are said to have attacked the officer while on duty at the home of the Resident State Attorney of Kisoro district, David Mugamba. Mugamba's home is near Kisoro View Guest House along Mutanda Road.
Kisoro district police commander Edgar Akankwatsa says the deceased had been sent to guard the home of the state attorney when he was hit with a blunt object.
He says that police have already launched a man-hunt for yet to be identified assailants. The attackers also took off with an AK47 rifle belonging to the deceased.
Mugamba, the owner of the home where the officer was killed, says the attackers did not make any attempt to enter his house and went unnoticed.
The area Local Council one Chairperson Juma Isma faulted the police for deploying one person at what he called a sensitive place. He revealed that it would be better if the officers are deployed in pairs so that they can always rescue one another in case of any problem.
Richard Ndyana, the Kisoro Municipality mayor, says the incident has left locals worried since the security personal had just managed to get rid of guns smuggled in the district from Democratic Republic of Congo.
He says that if the stolen gun is not tracked down, it may be used to torment the area residents.

By the time of filing this story, the deceased's body had been taken to Kisoro hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
