Uganda has named their final team for the 2014 Africa Cross Country Championship to take place at the Kololo Independence ground on March 16th.
 
Namayo Mawerere, the Media officer of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) told URN on Thursday that they are confident it is a strong team that will do the nation proud by winning medals.
 
Double Commonwealth gold medalist Moses Kipsiro and Isaac Ayeko will lead Uganda’s team against the other strong athletes from Kenya, Eritrea and Ethiopia.
 
The last African Cross Country Championships were held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2012 and this will be the 3rd edition since its re-launch in 2011. Mawerere said a record 26 countries confirmed their athletes to take part. Timothy Toroitich, who came 4th at the World Cross Country event is also part of the team.
 
Dominic Otucet, the President of the Athletics body in Uganda said they are still short of funds and are also waiting for the President Yoweri Museveni to fulfill his pledge towards the championship. The President promised $360,000 at a Stephen Kiprotich appreciation dinner at his country home in Rwakitura.
 
Some of the athletes on the women’s senior team include; Juliet Chekwel, Vanice Chemutai, Doreen Chesang and Winnie Nannyondo among others. The team will also have junior athletes.
