Moses Kipsiro will not be part of Uganda's marathon team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil even after hitting the qualifying mark.

Making his debut in marathon in Hamburg, Germany on Sunday, the three time Commonwealth Games gold medalist finished 14th with a time of 02:15:48. "Yes he run under the Olympic Games qualifying mark of 2:17:00, but will not be part of the team," Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) told URN.

Otuchet reasoned that although Kipsiro is the 6th athlete to qualify for the Olympics in marathon, they are only allowed three places and the fourth being Stephen Kiprotich who is the defending champion.

In Hamburg Kipsiro tried to keep with the leading pack, but the likes of Ethiopia's Tesfaye Abera who won the race and Kenya's duo Philemon Rono and Josphat Kiprono placed second and third proved in better form. Ethiopian Meselech Melkamu won the women's race.

Otuchet said since Kipsiro has run out of time now to be among the top four runners to represent Uganda in marathon, he still has a chance in the 10,000m and 5,000m to beat the qualifying mark. Besides eight athletes, two boxers have already qualified to represent Uganda at the 2016 Olympic Games.
