Uganda’s gold medal winner at the 2012 London Olympics Stephen Kiprotich will today receive over 350 million that was collected by corporate companies through the New Vision Group, his manager has said.

Godfrey Nuwagaba, who is also treasurer of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that they received confirmation form Vision Group on Thursday that there is a dinner for Kirpotich at the New Vision offices and it is at the same function that the Corporate bodies will present their offers to the star athlete.

But The New Vision, in its story published today, say they will be giving Kiprotich 257 million shillings and not 350 million as indicated by Nuwagaba.

On August 12, the 23-year old Kiprotich made history when he won gold in the 42km Marathon, beating two rival runners from Kenya to break the 40-year jinx since Uganda last won gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics by the late John Akii Bua.

The athlete who has been in Kampala since returning in Uganda is also awaiting the official ceremony with his employers Uganda Prisons. Nuwagaba says he decided to keep Kiprotich away from the many functions and journalists because he has been complaining of fatigue.

Upon his arrival from London, Kiprotich was hosted by President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe and given 200 million shillings. The president also promised a three bed-roomed house for his parents in Kapchorwa.

MTN Uganda also gave him 10,000 US Dollars, while the British High Commissioner made him a Youth Ambassador.

Nuwagaba explained that besides the cash collected from the corporate bodies, many other people have promised things in kind and added that all these will be collected soon.
