They say they cannot effectively in the absence of uniform or identity cards that would give them authority in crime prevention.
 
They  made the call during a meeting at Kakumiro Police station with Kibaale District Police Commander Patrick Ewan Held..

They said whenever they go to areas to prevent crimes, the suspects or members of those communities ask them to identify themselves.

Recently Kibaale police withdrew all police uniforms from crime preventers citing misuse.

George Agaba  is one of the a crime preventers who spoke during the heated meeting.

In the same meeting, special police constables expressed concern over lack of appointment letters from the police force.

Akena Omadi an SPC who joined the force in 1997 said he has faced challenges in securing financial loans due to lack of an appointment letter as a security.

The Kibaale District Police Commander Patrick  Ewan said his office will soon issue certificates to about 290 crime preventers. He was silent about the identity card issue.

He further reminded Special Police constables that their contracts and appointment depend on their commitment to serving as police.
 
Ewan warned police officers against partisan politics saying that police force does not take instructions from politicians.
