The 2015 MTN Kampala Marathon will attract foreign athletes from Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Beatrice Ayikoru, the secretary of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) told URN on Wednesday that the athletes from the three foreign nations have already communicated that they will take part in the 12th edition of the event which takes place November 22.

"We expect this event to be bigger and more competitive this year," added Ayikoru. She added that UAF expects some top local runners to also spice up the marathon.

MTN Uganda launched the 12th edition of the annual event on Tuesday with a mission to rally runners to raise funds for the implementation of innovative climate resilient, environmentally smart bio-toilet technology in a number of selected primary schools in Kampala.

Unveiling this year's edition at a launch event held at Police Children's School Nsambya, MTN Uganda's Chief Executive Officer Brian Gouldie urged the public to register for the Marathon and run for a noble cause under the theme aptly dubbed- ‘Run for Kampala'.

Gouldie noted that the participation of runners in this year's marathon will go a long way in mobilising funds not only for the implementation of bio-toilet technology in selected schools around the five divisions of Kampala, but also geared towards improving access to sustainable sanitation and safe water for the vulnerable urban poor communities in Kampala.

Over the last 12 years, 140,000 entrants have participated in the annual marathon and raised over UGX1.2 billion to help people in less privileged communities.
