Up to a million farmers in Teso have secured a deal with a Kenyan firm to supply green gram for a period of five years.

Under their umbrella Teso War Victims Cooperative Union, the farmers signed an agreement with the firm called Millennium Integrated Agency for Agriculture.

Millennium Integrated Agency for Agriculture is a private organisation located in Nairobi, Kenya and was founded by women with the aim of marketing agricultural produce.

In an interview on Friday, the chairperson on Friday at the Union, Juluis Ocen, disclosed that they will supply up to 75,000 tons of green gram. The Agency is also involved in the processing of quality seeds for farmers.

Charles Obua, the director Millennium Integrated Agency for Agriculture, says under the agreement signed in Kampala on August 12th his firm will purchase the green gram from the union at 2,150 shillings per kilogram.

Teso War Victims Cooperative union members are also in advanced negotiations with another Kenyan firm, Malfing Logistics Company, to supply ground nuts, as well as cereals such as sorghum and maize.

Teso War Victims Cooperative Union was formed in May 2013 to bring together farmers from the 98 sub counties of Teso and some farmers from the neighbouring Lango region.

Ocen says the untold suffering caused by the rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army, Uganda People’s Army, Karimojong cattle rustlers and Holy Spirit Movement led by Alice Lakwena are some of the reasons behind the formation of the union.
