Path-Light, a non government organisation based in Kabermaido district has been closed over illegal operation and extorting money from locals.

The NGO advocating for the promotion of agriculture and provision of scholarships for needy children started its operations in Kaberamaido district last year.

But Kaberamido District Community Development Officer  Nelson Odela says Path-Light is not registered to operate in the district. The organisation has also been accused of extorting an unspecified sum of money from people seeking financial support.

One of these was Priscilla Ayelo, 20, who paid up to 120,000 Uganda Shillings to be considered for a scholarship to study mechanics while Michael Odongo paid 70,000 Shillings to secure a scholarship for his son.

Based on the accusations, Jimmy Ebil, the Kaberamaido Resident District Commissioner ordered for the closure of organisation saying that he has received numerous complaints from residents about the organisation.

Ebil notes that he has also ordered for investigation into the activities of Path-Light to ascertain how much money  they have so far extorted from the public.

However Rev. Amigo Odongo, the Executive Director of Path-Light denied extorting money from the public. He says he already secured 50 acres of land at Ogerai parish in Kobulubulu Sub County to set up a citrus farm when he had intended to train over vulnerable 300 youths in Agriculture and create jobs to over 100 youths.

He further blamed the district for blocking his registration even after presenting all the required documents claiming some officials had asked him for a bribe of 3 million  Shillings for registration. District authorities have refuted the claim.
