Police in Lyantonde have today arrested a 20-year-old youth for stabbing his 17-year-old girlfriend and killing her on the spot after she ended their relationship.

The incident occurred last night at around 10pm in Lyantode town.

Shafik Ssekasanvu (20) attacked Nampijja Rose (17) who was staying alone in one of the rooms at her parents’ home and stabbed her twice in the chest before he disappeared.

According to residents, the lovers had fallen out three weeks ago after a serious misunderstanding. Nampijja went on to start dating another man which Ssekasanvu did not take well.

The former lovers had been members of a karaoke group in town where they met two and half years ago.

Silvester Balya, the deceased's father, says Nampijja yelled for help but they did not reach her in time. They found her dead, lying in a pool of blood. He says she repeatedly shouted Ssekasanvu's name during the struggle.

Balya says that he had not been able to monitor his daughter's movements and associates from the time she dropped out of school in primary seven. She left school saying she wanted to pursue a music career.

Abdul Hakim Ssekimpi, one of Nampijja's neighbours, says that since the separation Ssekasanvu had been threatening to kill Nampijja if she did not reconcile with him. Nampijja did not seem to take him seriously.

Keith Thomas Eyaku, the District Police Commander, confirms the incident and reveals that Ssekasanvu was arrested trying to flee the town.

Upon arrest, Ssekasanvu confessed to the crime. He said he had stabbed her in a fit of anger.

A post-mortem conducted on Nampijja reports that she died from excessive loss of blood.
