Lt General Kale Kaihura, the Inspector General of Police has told parliament that the ongoing city murders are connected to the rebel allied Democratic Forces led by Jamilu Mukulu. He said this while appearing before the Parliamentary committee on Defense and Internal Affairs on Thursday. He was responding to a query raised by Hassan Kaps Fungaroo, the Obongi County MP asking him explain the recent city, in which prominent Muslim leaders were gunned.

Sheikh Abdul Kareem Ssentamu and City businessman Sheikh AbubakerKiweewa were shot dead along William Street and Kisasi respectively. Kaihura informed the committee that he has set up a special crime intelligence squad within the Criminal Investigations Department to curb the ongoing organized crime. According to Kaihura police have already arrested 15 suspects in connection to the murders.

He however, said that they are yet to conclude investigations into the murder of Sheikh Sentamu. He said that the shooting of Kiweewa at his prime supermarket in Kisaasi is also connected to Jamilu Mukulu and not robbers as it had been claimed earlier. Kaihura alleged that the duo was killed for decampaigning the recruitment of Muslims into ADF rebel activities.

He stressed that managing crime is a joint responsibility of court, police, prisons and the Director Public prosecution.

However, he says the problem stems from courts that do not give the suspects deterrent punishments adding that prison facilities are no longer correctional facilities. Kaihura says that most of the convicts instead come out connected to bigger crime networks.
