A market upgrade project in Masaka has raised tension among vendors who fear loosing ownership opportunities. United Nations Habitat recently donated 800 million shillings to Masaka Municipality to help upgrade its dilapidated markets. According to Masaka Deputy Mayor, Kasibante Kibabirire, Nyendo Ssenyange market will be upgraded into a modern national market. The program involves building over 400 stalls, a well defined drainage channel and three water born toilets. Construction is expected to take one and half months. The market vendors have however resisted attempts to temporarily relocate to a nearby yard. They say the municipal authorities are relocating them where there are no toilet facilities. They were also worried that the market had been sold to some businessmen from Kampala. Municipal authorities have showed the vendors documents to prove that the market is still in the hands of the Masaka municipality. The Nyendo Market chairman, Simon Kibamba saiys that the vendors have vowed not to relocate before the toilets are provided.
