Government sponsored students at Gulu University have staged a strike to protest the delayed payment of their allowances for the last two months. The students rampaged this morning, prompting Police to swing in action. At least four students were picked up in connection to the strike.


 
Titus Emma, a student in the faculty of Education, says the University has failed to pay their living and faculty allowances yet most of them stay in private hostels. Professor George Ladaah Openjuru, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Gulu University blames the delayed payment of the allowances on errors in the transfer of funds.

 
He says both the University Bursar and Secretary are in Kampala to rectify the errors. Prof. Openjuru assured the rowdy students that their Money has already been disbursed into their bank accounts this afternoon.

 
He said the arrested students will be released without any charge. Gulu University is not new to strikes. In May 2016, a total of 1,000 students of faculty of Education and Humanities where suspended for torching the University main hall while protesting the delayed release of their results.
