A Gulu University student's health is in critical condition after he attempted to commit suicide after being rejected by his girlfriend.
 
The student Isaac Okello (26) reportedly swallowed an unspecified number of Valium tablets and alcohol after learning his girlfriend would not continue a relationship with him.
 
The Bachelor of Education degree student was rescued by residents who heard him thrashing in his room as the tablets took effect.
 
Okello was immediately rushed to Gulu Regional Hospital. He had lost consciousness on the way and yet to regain consciousness by time of filing this report.
 
A suicide letter written by Okello was recovered in his room. In the letter, Okello explained that he had decided to take his own life because he could not survive without a girlfriend he only identified as Jennifer.
 
In the same letter, Okello said he had offered to stop his studies to live with Jennifer but she had still spurned him. This prompted him to attempt to commit suicide on Tuesday.
 
This is the 3rd time a Gulu University student has attempted to commit suicide.
 
In 2009 James Indaba committed suicide after discovering that he was HIV Positive. He was found hanging in his room.
 
Another Gulu University student committed suicide in 2012. He was found hanging in a classroom in Gulu Town Primary School. Passersby were attracted by the sound of a radio he had left on in his pocket.
