Over 63 Traditional Healers in Gulu have graduated after attending a 4-month training.

The 4 month training conducted by the Acholi Child Rescue Team, a community based Organization in Gulu was in the areas of abortion management, Dangers of child sacrifice, Child kidnaps and record keeping among others.

The graduation ceremony took place on Saturdayfrom Ker Kwaro Acholi, the Acholi Cultural Institution in Gulu Municipality.

Juliet Adoch the team leader for the Acholi Child Rescue Team says they felt a need for such training in order to ensure that traditional healers get basic knowledge on the laws regarding child sacrifice, child kidnaps and abortion and as such do not encourage such in execution of their duties.

Adoch also noted that many of the traditional healers were facing challenges after the over 20 years of LRA war because most of the practices had faded.

The traditional healers also condemned counterparts from other regions saying they were coming to taint Acholi culture through their practices.

“It is normally the traditional Healers from other region who come here with their Mayembe [Witch crafts] and they begin to sacrifice children. In Acholi tradition such things were not there”, the traditional healers explained.

They also promised to work with the police to identify foreign traditional healers who are not working according to the Acholi tradition.

The graduation ceremony was attended by herbalists from China, Canada, Britain, and Columbia.
