Gulu district has begun installing weather forecast equipment at all sub counties to improve the presently unreliable flow of information on climate changes.

Jackson Lakor, the Gulu district Agricultural Officer says that they have already procured equipment that will be installed in every sub county. He said the new equipment would help to revive a sector that has been non functional following the twenty years of LRA war, which destroyed all the weather instruments previously available in the various areas of the district.

Lakor said various sites have already been identified across the district from where data analysts will be deployed to gather statistics on the weather variation for onward submission to the meteorology department where the information would be processed and delivered to the public.

Over the past years there has been a general outcry over the changes in the climate with irregular onset of rainy and dry seasons coupled with flooding and extended drought.

Coupled with unreliable weather forecast, the climatic changes have often caused poor agricultural production to many farmers who rely on rain water to support their crops.

Otika Ogikson, one of the farmers in Gulu says that unreliable rainfall has often affected their food production. He said many farmers recently had difficulty harvesting groundnuts after the rains stopped before the harvest period.

Ogikson however said like many farmers he would look forward to the improvement of access to reliable weather forecast.
