Two Gulu municipal councillors were on Friday morning charged with arson before grade one magistrate, Justice Said Barigye.

It is alleged that on 20th December 2012, Wilson Oyat, the Layibi division councillor 5 and Lawrence Abonga, an LC3 councillor for Bar-dege division together with other community members burnt down huts and property of one Judith Oyella and her three siblings, accusing them of witchcraft.

Oyat and his co-accused were given a non cash bail of 200,000 shillings each and they are both expected to re-appear on the 15th of February, 2012.

John Ojuk, one of the residents of the Bar-dege where the incident transpired last December, said their plea with the suspected witches to stop haunting community members fell on deaf ears, prompting them to alert their area leaders.

Oyat however says his arrest was politically motivated by some prominent politicians in the district who are regular clients of the suspected witches, although he declined to mention names.

Gulu regional police spokesperson Johnson Kilama says the alleged arson is tantamount to mob justice, and described it as unfortunate for persons entrusted with responsibilities of leadership to perpetuate such inhumane acts, with full knowledge of the law.
