During the meeting, Opendi called for the ban of the production of the local brew commonly known as, “Kutukutu” across the district. She said stopping the unhygienic traditional booze would help a lot in suppressing the disease as many brewers do not follow proper methods of making the drink.

Both Achia Sodium Terrence and Namoe Stella, the parliamentary representatives for Napak –Bokora County agreed to hold rallies to sensitize residents against the epidemic. However, Terrence fought back saying banning the local brew was not health because the Karimojong use the stuff to quell hunger.

He noted that effecting a ban on brewing the local brew would be an uphill task. Dr. James Lemukol, the District Health Officer – Napak says they have registered cases from the neighboring districts such as Moroto, Katakwi and Kotido.

He appeals to the communities to observe hygiene and sanitation to counter the epidemic.
