Four people have been killed in an attack in Mandera district, near the Kenya-Somali border. According to preliminary reports trickling in, armed men attacked a lorry carrying examination papers killing the four people on board.

Kenyan Red Cross spokesperson Nelly Muluka-Oluoch told the AP news agency that Red Cross staff who went to the site of the attack reported four deaths.

Kenya blames Somalia's militant Islamist group al-Shabab for a spate of abductions on its territory.

Al-Shabab denies the allegation and has vowed to take revenge against Kenya for sending troops into Somalia.

Police in the Kenyan capital Nairobi has been put on a heightened state of alert.
