Police in Masaka are holding a Pakistani national and four other people for unlawfully distributing items to voters in Buyaga village in Kyanamukaaka Sub-county. The suspects are Muhamaan Miami Hashad, Maria Nayiga, Emmanuel Kayima, Charles Bukenya and another only identified as Bazanyanengo.

The four were arrested last night at around 1:45am. The suspects were driving in a Prado vehicle registration number UAG 954D, when they were intercepted by Police. They were found with over 50Kg of sugar, boxes of soap and over Shillings two million.

The suspects were held briefly at Kyanamukaaka Police station before they were transferred to Masaka police station for safety. Kaamad Mugyenyi, the Southern Regional Criminal Investigations Officer, says the suspects were distributing the items to voters on behalf of Mary Babirye Kabanda, the Masaka DP woman parliamentary candidate.

According to Mugyenyi, they picked up the suspects on a tip off from some voters. Babirye is a twin sister to her rival Fridah Kasse Mubanda, the incumbent Masaka Woman MP. Ronald Nkurunzima, a Police detective at Masaka Central Police Station, says the suspects denied they were bribing voters.  The suspects declined to speak to journalists about the matter.

According to Nkurunzima, the suspects will be arraigned before court any time after the polls. Efforts to contact Babirye Kabanda for a comment were futile because her number was switched off.
