The Inspectorate of Government office (IGG) in the Southern Region has arrested a fisheries officer for soliciting a bribe of 2 million shillings.

Erias Tusiime, alias Kagoma, the fisheries officer in charge Mugoye fishing village in Mugoye Sub County in Kalangala district, has been arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe of 2 million shillings from unidentified fisherman who was arrested with illegal fishing gear.

It is alleged that Tusiime and other Beach Management Unit officers conducted an operation at Mweeza fishing village in Kalangala district to arrest fishermen involved in illegal fishing and those with immature fish which they impounded and later set it on fire.

However, in the process of the operation Tusiime agreed with some fishermen to give them back their impounded fishing nets if they paid him 4 million shillings as a bribe. The fisheries officers would also stop the operation of impounding illegal fishing gear.

However, some fishermen tipped off the police who reported the matter to IGG’s office that intervened and arrested Tusiime.

The Southern Region Inspectorate Officer Reuben Bainomujuni confirms the operation. He says that after receiving complaints about Tusiime’s misconduct he advised the fishermen to send him the balance through MTN Mobile money system which they used to track Tusiime and arrest him.

He says that they have requested for a print out of the transaction from MTN which they are going to use as evidence against Tusiime adding that he will soon be arraigned before Anti Corruption Court when investigations are completed.

Fishermen have welcomed the arrest of Tusiime. They accuse him of blackmailing and profiteering by soliciting bribes from many fishermen and fish traders in Kalangala.

However, Tusiime dismissed the allegations baseless and aimed at tarnishing his name adding that he is innocent.
