Soroti Fruit Factory Unable to Process Entire Harvest from Teso Region

On Wednesday, a group of leaders drawn from different parts of Teso were shocked to learn in a meeting chaired by the Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Minister, Vincent Sempijja that the factory lacks the capacity to process all the citrus fruits produced by farmers.

Soroti Fruit Factory lacks the capacity to process all the citrus fruits produced by farmers across Teso sub region. There are more than 6000 registered citrus farmers under various primary cooperative societies and unspecified number of farmers growing citrus fruits on big chunks of land.
 
 
On Wednesday,  a group of leaders drawn from different parts of Teso were shocked to learn in a meeting chaired by the Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Minister, Vincent Sempijja that the factory lacks the capacity to process all the citrus fruits produced by farmers.
 

The factory, which cost Shillings 50 billion and has been under construction for close to 8 years, can only process 6 tons of oranges per hour of Washington, Valencia and Hamlin varieties and 2 tons of mangoes.
 
 
Michael Bwalatum, the Katakwi Resident District Commissioner wondered why farmers were mobilized to grow more citrus fruits for all those years, which can't be consumed by the plant.

Ronald Kigongo Akankwasa, the productions manager Soroti Fruit Factory, which is set to open on December 20th 2018 said the factory shall not be able to consume all the citrus fruits produced in Teso.

About a fortnight ago, 103 orange farmers from Kobuin Sub County in Ngora district petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga seeking compensation from government for rotting oranges worth Shillings 1 billion per season.
 

Vincent Sempijja, the Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Minister is convinced that the factory shall work fulltime given the abundant citrus fruits.
