Bishop Katonene Asks for Forgiveness as He Quits

Bishop Yona Mwesigwa Katonene has asked for forgiveness from Christians in Greater Bushenyi sub region as he bows out of West Ankole Diocese.  Bishop Katonene handed over office to Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa of Ankole Diocese over the weekend on the directive of the Archbishop of Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali.

On September 28th 2016, Ntagali wrote to Bishop Katonene asking him to hand over his office after clocking 65- years- of age. In his letter, Ntagali his office will assume and exercise the Episcopal jurisdiction over the diocese until a new Bishop is installed.

 
While speaking at his last service as the Bishop of West Ankole Diocese Ankole on Sunday, Katonene who has had a fluid relationship with the Christians over the past few years, asked for forgiveness from all those who felt offended during his term of office.
 
 
Katonene also revealed that many people hurt him during his 11-year's reign as Bishop and said he had forgiven them. During his tenure, Bishop Katonene was accused of among other things of interfering with the running of Ankole Western Institute of Science and Technology (AWIST).
 
 
He was also accused of influencing the election of members of the diocesan synod and the Diocesan council. In his speech, Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa asked Christians in West Ankole to open a new chapter and work towards building their Diocese.
 
 
URN spoke to some of the Christians shortly after Bishop Katonene handed over office. According to Batungi, a new Bishop should have been elected if Katonene hadn't tried to influence the election of his successor. Christine Kamusiime another Christian wants Bishop Katonene should fix the program that were messed up under his term other than just asking for forgiveness.
