Africa's former top player Edwin Ekiring returned to winning ways when he secured the men's singles of the 2014 Nigerian International Badminton Championship that climaxed in Abuja on Sunday.

The Ugandan professional player based in Netherlands stopped Genim Arnaud from France 11-4, 11-7, 4-11, 11-9 to win the men's title during the final played at the Gymnasium Hall of the Abuja National Stadium Complex.

Ekiring who has represented Uganda at the last two Olympic and Commonwealth Games told URN online that he is happy to win a major event again after a long time.

In the women's singles, Uganda's top player Bridget Shamim Bangi lost to the eventual winner from Switzerland Nicole Schaller 11-5, 11-5, 11-10 at the semifinal stage. The Switzerland player went on to beat the tournament's top seed from Nigeria Grace Gabriel 11-8, 11-3, 7-11, 10-11, 11-6.

But Bangi managed to win the women's doubles title when she paired with Egypt's Hadia Hosny to stop the Nigerian highly ranked pair of Tosin Damilola Atilaybe and Fatima Azeez 11-5, 11-10, and 11-10.

The tournament which was sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation-(BWF) attracted players from Nigeria, Egypt, Uganda, France and Czech Republic. ) It had total prize money of UGX27million (US$10, 000).

The Nigeria International forms part of the African circuit comprising of 10 Internationals (Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lagos, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Mauritius, Uganda and Zambia).
