Africa's top badminton player Edwin Ekiring will face a tough test today when he battles  the world's no 16 Hans Kristian Vittinghus in the first round of the Bitburger Open Championship in Germany.


"It is not going to be an easy task, but facing these top players in a Grand Prix event is good for me," Ekiring told URN on Monday night.


Fresh from losing in the final of the Morocco International Open Championship on Sunday, Ekiring said although he has never faced the Danish player before he is looking forward to the match. "I hope I can win my first round game and move to the second round," he added.


Ekiring is targeting qualification for his third Olympic Games and is hoping to maintain his world ranking among the top 100 and also remain Africa's number one player. He explained to URN that he is trying to compete in several tournaments in Africa and around the world so that he attains more ranking points and also polish on his game.


Victory for Ekiring in the first round will see him face the winner between Michal Rogalski (Poland) and Misha Ziberman (Isreal). The event taking place in the town of Saarbrucken has also attracted the world's top ranked players like Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien Chen (5), England's Rajiv Ouseph (23) and 47th ranked Sho Sasaki (Japan) among others.
