Uganda's Edwin Ekiring has qualified for the semi-final at the on-going 2017 Uganda International Badminton Open Championship.

The Holland based player stopped Egypt's Ahmed Salah 21-16, 24-22 in a quarter final match of the men's singles played at the MTN Arena, Lugogo on Saturday afternoon.


Ekiring who has never won the Uganda International Open Championship title will now face Jordan's Ahmad Aishannik on Sunday morning at the semi final stage. Ekiring had earlier in the morning stopped another Ugandan player Irfan Ali Bhadusha 21-12, 21-6 in thee second round. "I have played the Jordan player before and beat him, but the semi final this time is different," said Ekiring.

The tournament's top seed Georges Julien Paul also qualified for the semi finals after he beat Jordan's Mohd Naser Mansour Nayet 21-13, 14-21, 21-14. The Mauritius player stopped Uganda's Brain Kasirye 21-6, 21-19 in the second round. He will face now face Italy's Rudolf Dellenbach in the semi final.


Two Ugandan women players Bridget Shamim Bangi and Aisha Nakiyemba also qualified for the women's singles semi finals. Bangi who will now face Egypt's Menna Eltanany defeated Zambia's Ogar Siamupanga 21-14, 21-15, while Nakiyemba saw-off another Egyptian player Doha Hanny 21-14, 21-15.


In the men's doubles Ekiring and Daniel Mihigo also qualified for the semi finals where they will face Aatish Lubah/Georges Julien Paul (Mauritius).

The event sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) which ends on Sunday has attracted players from Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Jordan, DR Congo, Mauritius, Egypt, France and Italy.
