The win boosted Ekiring's chances of recapturing the top spot for the African continent that he lost to Maliekal last week and improving on the world ranking. Although Ekiring went on to suffer defeat to Italy's Rosario Maddaloni in the semi final, he said he was happy to finally beat Maliekal.

Maddaloni was meant to face the tournament's top seed Howard Shu (US) last night, while the women's final was to feature Kate Foo Kune (Mauritius) and Hungary's Laura Sarosi.

In the rankings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) last week Ekiring dropped seven places to 90th with 19403 points, while Maliekal who also won a gold medal at the All Africa Games is 89th and first in Africa.
