Police in Kibaale district are hunting for a defilement suspect who escaped from police cells barely a day after arrest.

35-year old King Godfrey, a brick-layer and resident of Kiyanja village, Kyebando Sub County, Kibaale, was arrested on Monday evening.
Godfrey was caught in the act of defiling an 11-year old girl by residents after the minor raised an alarm.

Joseph Okumu, Officer in-charge Kyebando Police Post, explains that Godfrey managed to break out of the cell on Monday night.

It is suspected that the suspect broke through the cell windows.

Okumu refuted charges that police had been negligent in ensuring the suspect was properly guarded after arrest.

John Tibwetera, one of the residents, wondered how Godfrey could break out of a heavily guarded facility and escape without the slightest detection.

Okumu argued prison breaks are possible but police was actively looking to re-arrest Godfrey. Okumu said Godfrey will face charges of unlawful escape and defilement once he is arrested and investigations complete.
