Traders in Kamuli town report that there has been a mass circulation of counterfeit money in the denomination of 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 shillings notes.

Most affected by this are mobile money shops and foods sellers in Kamuli town council. The money is circulated at night especially during the power outages.

Saleh Mohammed, Kentuckyrestaurant manager has lost shillings 130,000/- over the last two months as a result of counterfeit money. He has reported the matter to police.

Ben Tigawalana, a mobile money operator along Namwendwa road says he has lost close to 700,000 shillings mostly from travelers sending money through mobile money service.

Musa Nabende, Kamuli district police commander reports three suspects are in police custody in connection with the counterfeit money. He says the trio were found with goods worth 900,000 shillings purchased using the fake money.

The police commander has advised traders to report any incidence of counterfeit money and to buy purple efflorescent lights which use batteries to detect counterfeit money.
