Kapchorwa Chief Magistrate's Court heard today that athletics coach Peter Wemali accused of sexual harassment, infected three junior runners with the HIV virus.

Peter Wemali was remanded pending further investigations into the new charges of aggravated defilement  pressed against him.

Court amended the charges against Wemali from rape to aggravated defilement after hearing evidence this morning that Wemali infected three national runners with HIV. The girls are aged 15, 16 and 17 respectively.

The medical report presented today forms part of prosecution evidence against Wemali.

Wemali was not allowed to take plea because of the nature of his alleged offences.  presiding Magistrate RobbsWilliam Komaketch said the new charges against Wemali can only be heard by the High Court. He returns to Court on May 14th.

Wemali was arrested early this month from Kibuli Training School following a directive by Sipi Regional Police Commander, James Ruhweza. He had been accused by members of the national junior female athletics team for sexual harassment.  Wemali reportedly committed the offense during a training camp in Bukwo.

The reports sparked off a bitter row between Wemali and Commonwealth gold medalist Moses Kipsiro who first raised the matter on behalf of the female athletes and asked the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) to ban the Coach.

Kipsiro last month pulled out of the national team for the World Cross Country Championship in China claiming Wemali sent him death threats in text messages. The matter is still under investigation.
