Church Redeems Idle Land through Agricultural Initiatives

Busoga diocese is undertaking agricultural initiatives to boost its revenues and curb encroachment on its idle and dormant land.

The projects, to be started under Bugembe Cathedral, will include crop and animal production in Bugembe town council. It will cover 27.8 acres of land, part of the than 60 acres of land under the diocese that have been encroached on and grabbed.

The land in question had been leased out by Busoga Diocese in 2013, a decision which was contested by the parishioners.  Now Bugembe cathedral has teamed up with the National Agricultural Advisory Services-NAADS to make it productive.

Steven Wante a member of the Bugembe cathedral church says a demonstration farm will be set up under the wealth creation government program. He says the cathedral has already applied for cattle, poultry, maize and bananas for planting.

In Busoga region, Col. Dhamuzungu Oguli, the NAADs program manager says the NAADS program can be managed well under institutions like Busoga diocese where people are keen on accountability and progress, than individuals. n
