Bushenyi Municipal Council Chokes on UGX 700m Debt

Ishaka-Bushenyi Municipality is choking on debts worth 700 million shillings accrued from court cases. 


The money is for a total of 6 cases that the Municipality lost as a result of illegal termination of contracts and wrongful dismissal of staff.

Some of the cases involve a businessman Manfred Muhumuza who dragged the municipality to court after his contract to run the taxi park was illegally terminated. He was awarded 200 Million shillings.

The municipality also a lost case in which they were dragged to court after encroaching on a piece of land belonging to Julia Turinawe a resident of Nyarwanya in Bushenyi Central Division. 



Bushenyi municipality also lost a case in which Steven Wamala dragged them to court for unlawful dismissal and was awarded 70 million shillings in 2017 and was also reinstated.

 Steven Karuti the LCIII Chairperson Bushenyi Central Division says that there are threats of attaching the municipal properties if the debts are not paid.

Bushenyi Deputy Town Clerk Didas Muhanguzi says that they are trying to work a mode of paying the debts in phases.


Gordon Arinda the Bushenyi Municipality Member of Parliament says that the authorities in the Municipality must learn how to settle matters out of court.
