A group of concerned Christians in Sheema district has sued Yona Mwesigwa Katoneene, the West Ankole Bishop for alleged abuse of office.

Led by Canon Yowasi Rwamango Makaru, the Christians have filed a case before Mbarara high court, accusing the Bishop of using the "unconstitutional synod and its perverted committees" to disorganise the church.

Last week, the West Ankole Diocesan tribunal defrocked two reverends, two lay readers and a canon for allegedly failing to uphold Christian values and canons of Church of Uganda. Rev. Arthur Atwiine, the West Ankole Diocesan Secretary says the group was also accused of indiscipline, promoting violence, hooliganism and sabotaging the Bishop's pastoral visits according to the diocesan secretary

The affected church officials include Reverend Adonia Katebarirwe of Kitagata Archdeaconry, Rev. Elisam Katahwire of Masheruka Archdeaconry, Canon David Kabigumire of Kabwohe Archdeaconry and Abel Kyakwambara and ELiazare Rwaheru both lay readers.

Canon David Kabigumira, one of the affected church leaders accused the Bishop of using an illegal tribunal, saying it has never been approved by the synod. The synod is the highest organ of the diocese, which is charged with upholding church values and the constitution.

According to the group, there was violation of the provincial constitution and diocesan constitution and procedures. They say it is wrong for the old synod members to attend the meeting of the new synod members. They also argue that it is wrong to appoint minute recorders and resolution desk members as opposed to electing them.

They also claim that most of the members have served beyond their mandatory two terms. Canon David Kabigumira says the tribunal of West Ankole has one senior clergy Canon Eliasaph Ssempa, adding that the rest of the members are the Bishops advisers and his wife who don't represent any Constituencies.

This is the second time the Christians are dragging Bishop Katonene to court over alleged abuse of office and mismanagement of diocesan project funds. In 2013, the Christians fell out with Bishop Katonene accusing him of attempting to transfer some programs from Ankole Western University- AWIST campus at Kabwohe in Sheema to Katungu in Bushenyi district without the consent of the governing council.

However, the Christians withdraw the case following the intervention of a number of reconciliation committees.
