Former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye today started reporting to court in fulfillment of conditions of his bail for treason charges recently slapped against him.

Besigye was on July 12, released on a non-cash bail of 100 million Shillings and ordered to report to the Deputy Registrar of the Criminal Division of the High Court once every two weeks. Today was his maiden reporting day.

He appeared at court in the company of two of his lawyers; Ernest Kalibbala and Fredrick Mpanga.

Deputy Registrar Eleanor Khainza was however not in office as she was reportedly attending a conference in Entebbe. Subsequently, under the guidance of a court clerk, Besigye signed a record to show his attendance. His next court appearance is fixed for August 9.

Prior to his release, Besigye had been on remand at Luzira prison for two months. He was arrested in May 2016, accused of illegally taking oath as President of Uganda contrary to the outcome of the February 18, presidential election.

High Court Judge Wilson Masalu Musene also cautioned Besigye against engaging in acts of violence as part of his bail condition.
