The leader of the Forum for Democratic change party, Kiiza Besigye, is being detained at Kasangati Police station.The latest detention brings to five, the number of times Besigye has been detained in connection to the walk-to-work campaign against high food and fuel prices.
 
Besigye was arrested again this morning after a stand off with the police at Mulago hospital round about.
 
Security personnel swung into action after Besigye refused to use the Yusuf Lule road to connect to his destination. Instead he insisted that he wanted to go to Wandegeya to withdraw money from the bank. He remained glued to his seat in his vehicle despite police pleas to clear the road.
 
Using a sledgehammer and a pistol, a visibly irritated plain clothed security personnel, smashed the window screen on Besigye’s vehicle, and sprayed pepper spray into the car and forcibly dragged Besigye and his colleagues out of the car.
 
He was then bundled up onto a police pick up truck and taken to Kasangati police station.
 
His arrival in Kasangati sparked off fresh clashes between the police and FDC supporters protesting the arrest of their party leader. They pelted stones at the police, prompting an exchange of tear gas and live bullets.
 
Gayaza road was also blocked shortly after the news about Besigye’s arrest started filtering in. Opposition FDC members led by Alice Alaso rushed to Kasangati police station but were denied an opportunity to see their party president..
 
Besigye’s lawyers led by David Mpanga have also been denied access to their client.  
 
Besigye who can’t see well because of the pepper spray, is expected in court shortly.
