Police in Masaka have released on bond a radio journalist who was arrested on Monday for inciting violence. Ssozi Lwazi Ssekimpi, the news editor at Top Radio in Masaka, was arrested for a radio program broadcast on Saturday last week. He says he was detained and questioned for statements made when he was previewing the highlights of the day's newspapers. Ssekimpi insists that he did nothing wrong and merely repeated election observations that were made by other sections of the media. He accuses the police on focusing on the wrong issues instead of the numerous reported cases of election malpractice that he claims occurred in Sembabule, Masaka and Bukomansimbi districts. The police have not opened an inquiry file on Lwazi Ssekimpi and he says he has no idea where the investigation will go next. The southern regional police spokesperson, Noah Sserunjogi, says the matter is still under inquiry. He says the journalist is required to present himself to the authorities on March 3rd for further questioning. The area coordinator for Human Rights Network for Journalists, Sadab Kitatta, condemns Ssekimpi's arrests. He calls on other journalists to protest against harassment by the police. ###
