In short
Makerere University and Mulago haospital have been sued for failing to reinstate a staff who was cleared of allegations of diverting patients to his private clinic.

A medical doctor who was arrested last year and suspended from his job at Mulago Hospital for unethical practice has sued the hospital and the Makerere University College of Health Sciences.

Dr. Edward Kunonya was arrested for stealing patients from Mulago in order to boost the number of clients at his private clinic in Kawempe. He was interdicted from Mulago pending investigations into the case and suspended from the Masters Degree he was pursuing at Makerere University.

A police investigation found no evidence to prosecute Dr. Kunonya and the case was closed.

The doctor was also accused of murdering a woman at his clinic. In that case as well, it was found that Kunonya played no part in her death.

Kunonya says that his interdiction was not lifted, despite the fact that both cases were closed. He says this is illegal and his dismissal was unfair.

In an affidavit supporting his suit, Kunonya says that his career as a medical officer is now in jeopardy. He says this position is further threatened by a forthcoming sitting of the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners' Council into the matter.

The doctor wants court to impose an injunction against this external hearing.

Makerere University and Mulago Hospital are expected to respond to the suit in 15 days.
