Seven men accused of growing and selling marijuana in Fort Portal, have been arrested. The suspects are David Ayebale, John Kamuhanda, Charles Magezi, Robert Tuhairwe, John Akugizibwe, Charles Asiimwe and Francis Baguma. The suspects were picked up in a joint operation mounted by police and other security agencies to curb the increasing cases of drug abuse. Abdul Mulawa, the Officer in charge Fort Portal central Police station says that the suspects have been growing marijuana as a source of income for their families. Mulawa says that the suspects have been selling the marijuana to businessmen in Fort Portal for export to the Democratic Republic of Congo. He says that during the operation about three acres of marijuana gardens were destroyed. According to Muwala, the high level of crime in Fort Portal is directly connected to drug abuse. He says that the most affected areas are Hakibaale, Rutete, and Kasanda sub counties where there is high drug abuse. He alleges that several people have also run mad because of smoking marijuana and chewing mairungi which is also grown in the district. According to Mulawa, the suspects will be charged in court with trading in Narcotics.
