Five pupils of Star Foundation Primary School in Kabale district are admitted in critical condition, after lightning struck their school. The lightning struck the school at about 7pm, as the pupils were leaving their dormitories for supper.

The injured pupils were rushed to Hamurwa Health Centre, but preparations were being made to transfer them to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital. The victims include Oscar Ruhangariho (P.7), Clever Ahumuza (P.6), Evaresti Zabayo (P.3), Lawrence Nuwahereza (P.1) and Desire Tumukunde (P.1).

Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate told URN that the police is in touch with the school authorities and the parents to ensure that the children are given enough care.

Kabale District Education Officer, Ssabiti Baabo confirmed the incident. He told URN that the education department has been sensitizing schools about preventive measures since the beginning of the term. He however says some schools have not heed to their advice and continue to run schools without lightning arresters.
The education department is now proposing that the district council buys and distributes lightning arresters to public schools in the district.

LC 5 councilor for Hamurwa sub-county, Legis Barisigara says the district council has been quiet about the issue, but more schools continue experiencing lightning strikes.

Maate says police have been asking schools and other public places to fit lightning arresters but many have not yet responded.

Lightning strikes in Kabale district are common. In 2014 alone, lightning strikes killed 45 people in the district.
