5 die in Bugiri Accident

The deceased were identified as Nadonyi Hira a resident of Muwayo in Bugiri district, Stephen Awilla from Pajwenda village in Tororo district, John Obbo of Mudodo village of Tororo, Valantine Ofumbi of Mulanda in Tororo, and Agutti Stella from Paya in Tororo district.

Business at Tilda Rice Company  in Bugiri district came to a standstill after an Isuzu elf  truck registration number UAP 265L burst a front tire, lost control, and overturned killing five  on the spot.

According to the police officer in charge of Bugiri traffic, Doreen Achirocan, the incident occurred on Tuesday, 24th July at 11am at Tilda Rice Company on Jinja-Tororo high way.

She said that a total of 11 fish mongers were on board traveling from Tororo to Mayuge district, Bukoto landing site to collect fish.

She added that the survivors were transferred to Bugiri hospital with several in critical condition.  The deceased were transferred to Bugiri hospital mortuary awaiting the arrival of their relatives to claim their remains for burial.

Achirocan revealed that the police have mounted a search for the driver who ran away after the accident. Five bottles of beer were discovered in the vehicle which leads the police to suspect that the driver was drunk.

James Odoi, one of the survivors,  told reporters at the hospital bed that the driver jumped out of the speeding vehicle after he lost control as they approached Busitema Junction. He said that the passengers complained about the driver’s over speeding but he ignored them.
