Police in Masaka is holding three suspected robbers from Kampala for illegal possession of an AK47 rifle.

The police declined to reveal the identity of the three men but said that they have been using the firearm rob people of their money and property in Masaka and Kampala.

The two men who are residents of Nalya and Nakawa in Kampala were arrested in Nyendo town in Masaka municipality after a tip off by residents who were robbed of their money and mobile phones last week on Tuesday night in Nyendo town and Buwunga sub-county.

Masaka District CID Officer, Frank Ntakovu says after the police interrogated the two suspects, they took the police to a maize garden and recovered an AK47 rifle hidden in the grass under a mango tree at Kagezi village in Buwunga sub-county.

The residents led by the LC1 Chairman, Charles Ziwa said the two suspects have been terrorizing the area and they robbed 17 million shillings from a business woman at Kazezi village. The woman was making her way home at 10pm from Nyendo town where she sells matooke.

The LC Charles Ziwa says he has registered seven robbery cases in which villagers lost seven mobile phones to these three men and money totaling to 18.4 million shillings. The robbers usually held their victims at gunpoint.

According to police, about 230 cases of robbery have been reported at Masaka Central Police since this year. 190 such cases were reported in 2012.

Masaka District CID Officer, Frank Ntakovu says the investigations have started and the two suspects will be charged with illegal possession of a rifle, robbery and murder because preliminary investigations have indicated that the suspects could have killed two people in Kampala.

The suspects said that they were only hired and given this gun to only rob and their bosses are in Kampala.
