Up to 21 million citrus trees are needed to meet the capacity of the Teso fruit factory.

President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday laid a foundation for the factory. The fruit factory which is currently under construction is located in Arapai Sub- County, six kilometers from Soroti town on the Soroti-Katakwi-Moroto road.

Museveni later told a gathering at Soroti Sports Ground that there are only seven million citrus trees in Teso and that it was just a quarter of the capacity of the processing plant.

Jorem Opian Obicho, the Chairperson Teso Tropical Fruit Cooperative Union, admits that Teso citrus farmers have not yet met the target. Opian however added that Teso has come a long way in growing citrus trees from when they used to wildly grow after somebody has eaten the fruit.

Opian also mentioned lack of ready market, slow space of completing the construction of the processing plant, and fruit and leaf spot diseases as some of the reasons for not meeting the desired target.

Opian further asked government to allocate farmers the redundant citrus farm land at Odina in Soroti for carrying out research in order to come up with high quality seedlings.

The construction of the citrus fruit processing plant which began early this year is expected to be complete by November 2015.

The fruit factory which will cost about 9.6 million US dollars is a joint venture between the government of Uganda and that of South Korea.

South Korea is funding the fruit plant project through its central development aid agency, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). Uganda will contribute 2.2 million US dollars through Uganda Development Corporation (UDC). Uganda's contribution will go towards provision of water, electricity, road network, construction of waste treatment plant and required studies for the project, among others.
