Rubanda Landslides Injure Two, Houses Destroyed

At least 15 buildings have been destroyed and two people injured by landslides during a heavy downpour in the Sub County of Muko, Rubanda District.

The most affected areas are, Rwanyenza, Matakara cells in Ikamiro parish and Rwabahondame in Bufundi Sub County. The damaged buildings included residential houses, shops, bars and a saloon. Gardens were equally swept away.

Residents say that the rains started on Wednesday, persisted through Thursday and increased during the night, resulting into landslides.

The injured were identified as, Robert Turyatunga, 35, and Kasole Ngabirano, 30. They two, residents of Makatara cell in Ikamiro parish, are now admitted at Muko Health Center IV.

Amlet Oworinawe, Turyatunga's wife says her husband and Ngabirano were swept away while saving merchandise in the damaged structures.

Jeninah Rubarenza, one of the affected persons says all her properties were destroyed.

Ambroze Turinawe, another area resident says that the road that connects Muko to Bufundi, Butanda and Katuna is blocked by huge stones blocking traffic from either side of the road.

Rubanda Chief Administrative Officer Judith Turyasasirwa says that the district is aware of the problem and is making all efforts to open the roads.
