100 Arrested Over NRM Electoral Violence

The arrest follows the burning of 20 houses in Rwampara county in Mbarara, and beating of supporters of rival aspirants in Isingiro district ahead of the NRM primaries.

Over 100 people have been rounded up in Mbarara and Isingiro on Monday evening ahead of the National Resistance Movement party primaries. 

The group is accused of masterminding violence ahead of Tuesday's NRM elections.
 
Police says 20 suspects were arrested in Isingiro and 80 in Mbarara.
The Isingiro District Police Commander, Moses Muzima says over 20 people have been arrested in the sub-counties of Endinzi, Ngarama, Bireere and Isingiro town council after ten supporters of Dr. Ponsiano Mugyenyi were beaten.

Mugyenyi is aspiring to unseat Maj. Bright Rwamirama from the Isingiro North parliamentary seat.
 
One of the suspects is NRM party chairperson for Rurongo B in Ngarama sub-county, who was found commanding a group of supporters to erect an illegal road block.

Muzima says they are also investigating some of Maj. Rwamirama's family members and army officers, who are alleged to have broken into the homes of Mugyenyi's agents and beat them up. 
 
Nathan Kamugisha, one of the victims say they were attacked by people in army uniform, who beat them up and confiscated declaration forms, mobile phones, motorcycles and money.

Bright Rwamirama, also State Minister for Animal Husbandry has denied any involvement.

The army and police are patrolling most of the streets and roads in the sub-counties of Bukanga County and Isingiro north constituency, to avert any possible violence during primaries.

Elsewhere, a combined force of security personnel combed villages in Mbarara following violent attacks perpetuated by supporters of different aspirants.

The Mbarara District Police Commander, Jaffer Magyezi says 20 houses were torched in Kyatokye, Nyamabare and Ibumba villages of Mwizi sub-county, Rwampara County. 
Magyezi confirms 80 people have been arrested in relation to the violence.

Magyezi says they are also looking for an army deserter, Silver Natuyamba. Natuyamba was allegedly using a pistol to torture supporters of different candidates and stealing from them.
