Uganda's Edwin Ekiring on Sunday lifted the men's singles title of the 2015 Egypt International Open Championship held in Cairo.


The top ranked African player stopped Slovenia's Alen Roj 20-22, 25-23, 21-18 in a highly competitive final. "I am happy to win this event which will improve my ranking by the Badminton World Federation," Ekiring told URN.


To reach the final Ekiring who is ranked 82 in the world brushed a side Malaysia's Ridzwan Rahmat 21-9, 21-4, while Roj defeated Yara Azad (Iraq) 21-13, 14-21, 21-14 in the semi final.


In the women's singles Africa's third best player Hadia Hosney stopped fellow Egyptian Doha Hany 21-16, 24-26, 21-17.


Ekiring is targeting qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. Only the top 100 world ranked players and the top player in Africa qualify for the Olympics. "I am now focusing on the Morocco International Open Championships," added Ekiring.


The Morocco International Championship will take place October 22-25. Ekiring will face tough competition from 2015 All African gold medalist Jacob Maliekal (South Africa), Pedro Martins (Portugal), Adam Dolmon (England), Maxime Moreels (Belgium), Bjorn Seguin (USA) and Vincent Espen (France).
