A two month old baby is the latest victim of a chimpanzee attack in Hoima.

Julius Nkasiime, son to Rosemary Nyangoma and Nyansio Byaruhanga, residents of Kikinga in Nyarugabo parish Bugambe Sub County was attacked by the chimpanzee on Tuesday afternoon.

Nyangoma told journalists at Hoima hospital where Nkasiime is admitted that her baby was attacked at around 12pm. She had laid the baby under a tree shade and started digging.

Nyangoma says she realised her baby was not where she had placed him when she heard him crying. A chimpanzee had picked up the baby and was trying to escape with it. She raised an alarm as she chased after the primate.

The fleeing animal dropped the baby. Nkasiime suffered a fractured left leg, injuries to his private parts and scratches on the head.

He is now admitted at the Accident and Emergency Unit of Hoima Hospital.

At the time this reporter visited the Unit on Wednesday morning, the baby was yelling in pain. The leg was plastered and his penis was bandaged, although his father Nyansio Byaruhanga complained of lack adequate attention from the health workers.

Nyansio complained that ever since he was referred to the hospital from Azur Clinic on Tuesday evening, his child hadn't been attended to by 10am on Wednesday when this reporter visited the hospital.

At the time of the visit there was no nurse or doctor at the ward. However, Dr. Francis Mulwanyi, the Hospital Director said the health workers were in a meeting at the time. He also rushed away for the meeting without commenting on the condition of the child and what treatment he was being subjected to.

Efforts to get a comment from Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust were fruitless as the manager Paul Hatanga was not in office at the time.

Conservationists have repeatedly accused residents of encroaching on wildlife territory.

This is the third child to be attacked by the chimpanzee in Hoima in less than two years.

In December 2012 six months old Leticia Murungi was attacked by a chimpanzee in Bubaale village, Bujumbura Division Hoima Municipality. Earlier in July the same year six month old Noelyn Asiimwe was bitten by an ape in Kyabigambire Sub County. She sustained a deep injury in her right leg and has since been operated on.
