Security Cracks Down On Terror Cells in Fresh Operation

Ugandan security operatives are conducting an operation on a suspected terror cell within the city. It is jointly conducted by the department of immigration, counter-terrorism police unit, the army and the Special Forces guard.

The operation is part of a wider effort by the security apparatus to avert a possible terror strike on the city following the installation of a new Al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Umar who has vowed to rein terror on countries contributing troops to the African Union Mission in Somalia.

Counter Terrorism director John Ndugutse confirms to Uganda Radio Network that the operation is underway to root out a terror cell within the city. He declined to give confirmation on the place where the operation was being carried out.

The US embassy has also issued an emergency warning for all its citizens in the city to look for ‘safe-places’ to stay while the operation goes on.

“Ugandan authorities are conducting operations against a suspected terrorist cell in Kampala. All U.S. citizens are advised to stay at home or proceed to a safe location. Shelter-in-place and await further guidance,” an emergency security message posted on social media read.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said he would communicate the details of the operation once they are through with it.

The operation is the second of its kind with the first being carried out in Makindye in 2011 after the bomb attacks. The previous operation was used to net suspected terrorists with alliances to rebel group
Allied Democratic Front (ADF)  It was carried out by the violent crime crackdown unit in Makindye.
