Pictorial: Heavy Rains Keep Katwe Salt Miners, Traders Out of Business

856 Views Kasese, Uganda

Salt miners at Katwe Salt Lake in Kasese district are unhappy about the prolonged rainy season which have destroyed their salt pans.
Katwe-Kabatoro Town Council, where the salt mines are located has experienced heavy rain for the last six months. This has raised the water levels, making it dangerous for the miners.

There are two salt mining activities at the lake; rock salt activity and salt winning.
Bakari Sebowa, a salt well owner at Lake Katwe, explains that the high-water levels make it impossible for people to trawl the bottom of the lake to collect  deposits. He says many laborers, who depend on salt mining have been rendered jobless while others have taken on odd jobs.
